A Tribute to Commemorate the Retirement of Professor Shinichi Uchida: A Legacy of Inspiration and Action
I would like to express my deepest respect and heartfelt congratulations on your well-deserved retirement. Your pioneering work in renal physiology, electrolyte regulation, and tubular transport—especially your outstanding contributions to nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, the WNK kinase pathway and salt-sensitive hypertension—has profoundly shaped modern nephrology. Your research has not only advanced Japan’s medical science but also become a cornerstone for clinicians around the world.
With the introduction of Professor Sei Sasaki, former distinguished professor of Nephrology,
Institute of Tokyo, I had the great opportunity to collaborate with you on
WNK1/4-SPAK/OSR-NKCC/NCC signal pathway. I am very delighted to learn from your work and to
follow the path you illuminated for our profession. Our collaborative achievements were
highlighted by fruitful publications including Cell Metabolism, JASN, PNAS, Hypertension,
Crit Care Med. Of note, besides being a famed professor of Medicine and superintendent in
teaching hospital, he is also an elite tennis player and golfer that we admire
extraordinarily.
As an educator, I would like to express my deep appreciation to your initiation and support
for the academic exchange programs between the Institute of Tokyo and the National Defense
Medical University (NDMU), established since 2013. These programs are designed to foster
academic and cultural exchange, allowing medical students to learn from each other and build
international networks.
Your retirement marks not an end, but a continued inspiration and action of the legacy and new chapter of influence, reflection, and action. Wishing you every day ahead, full of happiness, health, and success.
With profound respect,
Shih-Hua Lin, M.D.
Former Superintendent, Tri-Service General Hospital
Former President, National Defense Medical University
